What to do if you are in an auto accident:
- Do Not Panic
Remain calm and think. Assess the situation, the moments after an accident are very hectic however important; they may affect what options you may or may not have down the road.
- Are you injured?
Do you feel any immediate pain? If there are any passengers in the car make sure they do not have any obvious immediate injuries you may be able to treat. Sometimes passengers can be cut from glass from an auto accident however some injuries are not apparent for long periods of time after the accident.
- Call the police
Write down the officer's name, badge number, police station address and phone number. Ask how to get a copy of the accident report, the case number, and when it will be filed. Its extremely important for both parties sake that the police are involved and the accident is documented.
- Talk to the other drivers involved
You want to record the other driver's name, address and phone number. You also want their insurance information and policy number. Ask to see the information for yourself so you know its legitimate. Write down a description of the car and the license plate number.
- Photograph the accident scene
If possible, take pictures of the damage. If you don't have a camera, use a camera phone if you have one. A disposable camera is a great thing to keep in your glove compartment. Having photographs of the accidents may help your case later.
- Check for witnesses
If there are any people around the accident scene, ask them questions, take down their names and contact information. Have the witnesses talk to the police so their information can be properly recorded by the officer. The more information you have, the better. Sometimes a witness can be a major important piece in an auto accident case. Having their contact information is crucial.
- Remember the details
Try to remember and record any details you remember prior to the accident. Details such as speed limit, the speed you were actually traveling, information about the area (Was is a busy intersection? Was there much traffic? What were the wheather conditions?) will make your claim seem more reliable. Make sure you write all of this information down as soon as possible.
- Contact your insurance company
You will want them to get started on your claim as soon as possible. Make sure you give them all the information you have, this is where it pays off to get the insurance information from the other driver and the police report information.
- Speak with a lawyer
Speaking with a Maryland auto accident lawyer can be very beneficial even if you do not pursue a claim. Many times people are confused on what to do, sometimes the victim may never seek legal counsel and thereby may be missing out of their rightful compensation.
